Developers now have the ability to control in-app purchase catalogs through the new App Store API.

Apple has released a new Advanced Commerce API for in-app purchases. Developers can now manage large catalogs of in-app purchases or subscriptions more efficiently. The API allows developers to offer various types of in-app purchases, such as premium features, additional content, and digital goods, without using tokens or coins. Users no longer need to use digital currencies in mobile games to obtain in-game items, as they can now purchase items directly through in-app purchases.

The Advanced Commerce API will simplify purchasing flows for users but does not impact developers’ existing business terms or commission rates. However, developers cannot promote purchases made through the API on the App Store or use certain App Store features. Access to the API is granted on a per-app basis after meeting strict eligibility requirements.

The API is designed to provide developers with a powerful way to offer content and services worldwide through in-app purchases. Eligible apps must use one of three eligible business models and offer subscriptions through in-app purchases. Apps must be compatible with iOS 15, iPadOS 15, visionOS 1, or watchOS 8 to utilize the API.

The Advanced Commerce API aims to provide greater flexibility in in-app purchases, simplifying the purchase flow for users. Developers have the option to embrace the new API but must consider the implementation details carefully. Further changes in in-app purchases are expected as developers test the API implementation.
