Jobs’s death in 2011

Steve Jobs passed away at his Palo Alto home on October 5, 2011, at approximately 3:00 p.m. Pacific Time. The immediate cause of death was recorded as respiratory arrest, with a metastatic pancreas neuroendocrine tumor listed as the underlying cause.

Following his passing, his wife Laurene Powell Jobs issued a statement expressing gratitude for the support and asking for privacy during their time of grief.

Steve died peacefully today surrounded by his family.

In his public life, Steve was known as a visionary; in his private life, he cherished his family. We are thankful to the many people who have shared their wishes and prayers during the last year of Steve’s illness; a website will be provided for those who wish to offer tributes and memories.

We are grateful for the support and kindness of those who share our feelings for Steve. We know many of you will mourn with us, and we ask that you respect our privacy during our time of grief.

At the time of his passing, Jobs was 56 years old and had been receiving treatment for a rare form of pancreatic cancer since he was 49. He had been conscious of his health struggles, as demonstrated in his 2005 commencement speech at Stanford University where he spoke about mortality.

Despite undergoing treatments, including a liver transplant in 2009, Jobs remained dedicated to his work. His last public appearance was in June 2011, where he discussed plans for Apple Park.

On August 24, 2011, Jobs officially stepped down as Apple CEO. Reflecting on his career that evening, he expressed gratitude for the opportunities he had and the impact he made.
