YouTube Music and Apple Music have united in a surprising collaboration.

What you need to know

  • Apple Music and YouTube Music now support the transfer of music playlists.
  • Both companies have shared the process of transferring playlists on their support pages.
  • The transfer is currently only supported between these music streaming services.

Apple Music and Google’s YouTube Music have teamed up to provide users with a seamless experience, allowing them to transfer saved playlists between music streaming platforms. Previously, this process was not as convenient and required third-party apps like Soundiiz and Tune My Music, which often came with a fee. The new partnership between Apple Music and YouTube Music aims to simplify this process (via MacRumors).

Users can now easily transfer their playlists from Apple Music to YouTube Music or vice versa by following the step-by-step instructions provided on both companies’ support pages. Apple account holders can request to transfer their data on the Data and Privacy page and select Apple Music playlists to be transferred to YouTube Music.

Similarly, YouTube Music users can use the Google Takeout feature to transfer their playlists. While the transfer process seems straightforward, there are a few things to consider before initiating the transfer.

For a smoother transfer of playlists, users must have an active subscription to both music streaming platforms. While playlists transfer quickly, they will not be deleted after the transfer is complete. Additionally, transfers can only be made between Apple Music and YouTube Music, excluding other platforms like Spotify. For any other music transfers, users would still need to rely on third-party services.

This new feature for transferring playlists does not support transferring other songs in the library, only playlists. It also depends on the availability of songs across both platforms, so if a song from a playlist is not available on the receiving platform, users may face limitations.

Although the collaboration between Apple Music and YouTube Music for playlist transfer is a positive step, it would be beneficial for other major players in the music streaming industry to work together to provide users with a seamless experience and easy switching between platforms.
