YouTube’s pause button now leads to ads.
YouTube confirmed to The Verge that ads for paused videos are now a reality for viewers. The platform’s communications manager, Oluwa Falodun, mentioned that they have rolled out Pause ads to all advertisers following positive responses from both advertisers and viewers.
Last week, users started noticing these ads on the pause screen, as reported by Tech-Issues Today. Threads on YouTube’s subreddit showcased ads appearing after users paused their videos, with the ad displaying on the right half of the screen and pausing the video to the left. Mobile users also experienced ads rising from the bottom of their display.
The concept of ads on paused videos had been tested last year, and during Alphabet’s Q1 2024 earnings call, Google’s Philipp Schindler mentioned that advertisers are positive about this new ad format and are willing to pay a premium for it.
YouTube claims that these ads for paused videos were designed to be less disruptive.
