The Apple TV 4K now supports the latest version of Thread
With the integration of Thread 1.4 into tvOS 26, smart home devices using Thread will benefit from a much more reliable network.
Thread is an Internet Protocol (IP)-based wireless standard designed mainly for smart home devices. It creates a self-healing mesh network, offering better reliability in areas of your home that might struggle with Wi-Fi.
Thread 1.4, introduced in tvOS 26, brings significant enhancements, as identified by Matter Alpha during an analysis of the Apple TV’s networking details.
With iOS 18, Apple enabled direct control of Thread-enabled accessories from iPhones, eliminating the need for a Thread border router to expedite operations. The improvements brought by Thread 1.4 are expected to enhance this functionality even further.
Apple has incorporated Thread in its Home products for years, including the HomePod mini, HomePod, and Apple TV 4K, which serve as Thread border routers connecting your Thread network to your Home network. The iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max also come equipped with Thread radios.

One significant advantage of Thread is its low power consumption, making it a preferred option over Bluetooth-based accessories for battery-operated devices. It is widely used in various smart home products, including sensors, smart locks, and shades.
New Features in Thread 1.4
Released in September 2024, Thread 1.4 introduced a host of user-friendly improvements for this developing standard.

One major update is that Thread 1.4-compatible devices will form a unified mesh network within your home, rather than each smart home platform creating its own separate network. This promotes a more robust and extensive connectivity as devices can communicate with a broader range of units.
Each Thread 1.4 node device gains a unique internet connection, enabling accessories to offer features sourced from online services. For example, smart shades might adjust their position based on weather changes, while lights could shift colors according to sports scores.
Crucially, Thread 1.4 simplifies testing and deployment processes for manufacturers, allowing for easier troubleshooting and providing deeper insight into the overall Thread network.
This update is set to enhance the user experience for Thread devices, especially as manufacturers update their products. Thread 1.4 will become available to Apple users with the release of tvOS 26 in September.
