Apple has disabled news summaries due to inaccuracies reported. The BBC has filed a complaint with a UK antitrust authority against Apple and Google’s news services for diminishing its branding. The complaint is part of an ongoing investigation by the CMA into the dominance of the tech giants in web browser engines and smartphone operating systems. The BBC relies on worldwide recognition and respect to justify its funding, which largely comes from a unique “licence fee” model paid by UK households. The BBC is requesting the CMA to require Apple and Google to give more prominence to news sources featured in their apps. The BBC is concerned that its content is not receiving proper credit in these aggregators. The BBC argues that this downplaying of sources weakens its relationship with the UK population. Apple previously faced backlash for AI-generated news summaries that distorted or fabricated stories, prompting the company to disable summaries by default. Users can still enable the feature but are warned that it is in beta and may be inaccurate.
