The satellite SOS feature on the Google Pixel 9 is powered by technology from Skylo and Garmin.

What you need to know

  • Google’s Satellite SOS feature is launching first on the Pixel 9 series and the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, but only in the continental U.S. (not Hawaii or Alaska).
  • Garmin Response will handle rescue operations, connecting Pixel 9 users with local and international emergency services.
  • Skylo’s global satellite network makes it possible for the Pixel 9 to connect in remote areas, with potential for global expansion.

Google has partnered with Garmin and Skylo to introduce a Satellite SOS feature that allows you to send an SOS message via satellite when you have no cell service.

At the Made by Google event, Brian Rakowski, VP of product management, announced that the new Pixel 9 series would be the first Android devices to integrate Satellite SOS. This enables users to connect with emergency services and share their location even without a cell signal (via Android Police).

Apple introduced satellite connectivity to smartphones with the Emergency SOS feature on the iPhone 14. It provided users in remote areas a way to seek help when cell coverage was lacking.

Similar to Apple’s Emergency SOS, Google’s Satellite SOS offers a safety net. In situations without cell service, you can use Satellite SOS to reach emergency services. After providing details about your situation, you can text first responders and notify your emergency contacts.

Google’s Satellite SOS, like Apple’s satellite service, does not depend on your cellular carrier.

The Satellite SOS feature on the Pixel 9 is a collaboration between Google, Garmin, and Skylo. Garmin Response, known for its global emergency management expertise, will manage rescue operations for Pixel 9 users in the U.S.

This partnership has the potential to be a game-changer, bringing satellite SOS to Pixel users and expanding Garmin’s emergency response services to a larger Android audience, according to Garmin’s press release.

Skylo plays a significant role in this collaboration as well. Its global satellite network enables Pixel 9 users to seek help in remote locations. This network opens up the possibility for satellite SOS to go global beyond the U.S.

Skylo partnered with various satellite operators and collaborated with Google to create a system for phones to connect directly to satellites. This advancement in technology enables communication in emergencies, even in isolated areas, as stated in Skylo’s press release.

Although Satellite SOS is a groundbreaking feature, it is currently only available on the Pixel 9 series and the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. It is initially rolling out in the U.S. and will not be accessible in Hawaii and Alaska, as per Google’s support page.
