The implementation of RCS encryption for communication between Android and iPhones is expected to happen in the near future.

The latest update from Apple, iOS 18, brings exciting news for Android users who want to message their friends with iPhones. This update allows iPhone users to send RCS messages to Android users, significantly improving the messaging experience between the two platforms.

Key features of this update include typing indicators, read receipts, enhancements to group messaging, and better quality media sharing. While the familiar green bubbles remain, the introduction of RCS by Apple is a significant step forward.

However, there is one important feature missing from this update – encryption. While Google has offered end-to-end encryption for RCS messages in their Google Messages app since 2020, there is currently no encryption between Android and iPhone devices. The industry is working towards introducing standardized, interoperable messaging encryption, with the GSMA highlighting it as the “next major milestone” for RCS.

Although there is no timeline for the arrival of encryption, the industry recognizes its importance and is committed to implementing it. Given the pace at which the industry progresses, it may be some time before encryption is established between Android and iOS devices.
