Rumors circulate once more about the iPhone 18 Pro featuring an under-display Face ID.

The Dynamic Island may see a reduction in cutouts with the iPhone 18 Pro.

Display industry expert Ross Young has indicated that the iPhone 18 Pro models will likely feature under-display Face ID, although the selfie camera will still be visible for now.

The speculation around under-display Face ID has been circulating since the technology’s inception, consistently surfacing in discussions. The infamous notch and the subsequent Dynamic Island were both necessary due to the need for Face ID screen real estate.

According to Ross Young, former CEO of Display Supply Chain and current VP at Counterpoint Research, Apple plans to integrate Face ID components beneath the display in the iPhone 18 Pro, expected in 2026. This detail emerged from a social media update regarding a recent business conference.

When asked about placing the selfie camera under the display to eliminate all cutouts, Young explained that the necessary technology is not yet ready, as under-panel cameras still require further development.

Currently, the Dynamic Island features two distinct cutouts: a circular one for the selfie camera and a larger, elongated one for Face ID components.

By hiding the sensors beneath the display, Apple could switch to a single pinhole cutout for the selfie camera, potentially centering it while still using the Dynamic Island software for interactive experiences.

Reducing even a few millimeters of unused screen space could radically alter the appearance of the iPhone. The Dynamic Island made its debut with the iPhone 14 Pro, and it would stand to reason for Apple to adopt a new design four years later with the iPhone 18 Pro.

However, Apple must ensure that Face ID remains as secure and effective as when it is visible on the display. Implementing an under-display system will be contingent on maintaining security and ease of use.
