Report: Google Set to Finalize Embrace of Magnets and Qi 2 Wireless Charging Technology

It’s been a while since Apple launched MagSafe, even making it available to the Wireless Power Consortium in early 2023. Despite this, we haven’t seen much action on the Android front regarding this technology. However, a recent report may shed light on Google’s plans for magnets and the Pixel 10 series.

Sources from Android Authority suggest that Google might integrate Qi 2 wireless charging into the Pixel 10 lineup and promote its adoption by releasing a range of accessories designed to capitalize on this feature. These accessories are expected to include a magnetic charger, a stand charger, and a “Ring Stand.”

For those unfamiliar, the Qi 2 standard defines the minimum speeds for wireless charging and incorporates magnetic coils to aid in alignment, enhancing charging efficiency. While wireless charging has traditionally been criticized for its inefficiency, advancements in technology have helped mitigate this issue.

Google’s suite of MagSafe-like accessories will be branded as Pixelsnap. One of these accessories, presumably the stand, could enable a new Hub Mode that Google is reportedly working on, transforming your phone into a smart display while it charges—a concept we’ve seen before.

All we can say is, it’s about time.
