Mozilla has announced the upcoming shutdown of Pocket, its read-it-later app, which enables users to save content for later consumption. The app will cease operations on July 8, 2025.
Reflecting on Pocket’s journey evokes memories of the early Android days when changes happened rapidly, new apps frequently emerged, and significant UI redesigns captivated our attention. Pocket was once considered an essential app that dominated discussions, yet it hasn’t been mentioned in over a decade. Times have certainly changed.
According to Mozilla, the decision to close Pocket stems from the evolving ways people save and engage with content online, prompting the company to redirect resources to other initiatives. This was essentially their only comment on the matter.
You can continue to use Pocket until July 8, but after that, you’ll have until October 8, 2025, to export your content, as the app will transition to an export-only mode. Following that date, Mozilla plans to permanently delete all data.
