Pairing a Fitbit to your Android phone just got a whole lot easier

More Bluetooth devices could benefit from simple pairing like this.

What you need to know

  • Fitbit devices like the Versa 2 are now able to automatically prompt your phone to complete the pairing process during initial setup.
  • Tapping the prompt instantly directs you to download the Fitbit app and pairs your device over Bluetooth.
  • This new interface mirrors that of Google’s Pixel Buds true wireless earbuds.

Fast Pair is one of Android’s most convenient features when it comes to managing Bluetooth peripherals like headphones and smartwatches, but whether or not you’re able to take advantage of it completely depends on the accessories you use. Luckily for fitness fanatics, that quick and easy pairing process seems to have made its way to Fitbit devices.

Recently discovered by 9to5Google’s Ben Schoon, devices such as the Fitbit Versa 2 are now able to automatically send a push notification to nearby phones, prompting users to download the Fitbit app from the Play Store and automating the Bluetooth pairing process.

This interface is similar to the pairing process with Google’s Pixel Buds, which introduced an improved version of Fast Pair, with deeper access to device information such as battery life and location.

It’s unclear whether Fitbit’s new pairing process makes use of the improved Fast Pair, but whatever the case, this is a nice convenience that makes Fitbit devices feel more closely integrated with Android, much like the process of pairing H1-equipped Apple accessories like the Apple Watch and Airpods Pro to an iPhone.
