The Nigerian Communications Commission [NCC] has tasked telecommunications service providers to stop the unsolicited text messages sent to subscribers via their networks.
Speaking at the Fourth Quarter Meeting/Open Forum of the Industry Consumer Advisory Fourm [ICAF] in Abuja, the Director, Consumer Affairs Bureau, Maryam Bayi, said the Commission receives numerous complaints from telecoms subscribers on various issues affecting them.
Bayi said the NCC has taken various initiatives to ensure that service providers curb the unsolicited text messages from their networks, adding that the initiatives have begun to yield fruit as there has been some improvement.
According to her, “we cannot say that unsolicited text messages are completely wiped out. But they have reduced.
“In out last meeting with service providers, they told us they had introduced some measures to reduce unsolicited text messages to subscribers.
“They stated that they had introduced the possibility of subscribers to subscribe such text messages or opt out. They have improved on this in the last six months.
“Again, the operators have become sensitive to consumers complaints. But we insist that they must do something about this, because if they are not making money out of this, they would have stopped them on their networks.
These congest the networks and result in poor quality of service.”
Therefore, Bayi charged operators to ensure that consumers of telecoms services and products have value for their money, noting that NCC was concerned about the welfare of consumers across the country.
