Learn how to utilize the various text effects available in the Messages app on your iPhone with the latest iOS 15 update.

The iOS 18 software update from Apple introduced several new features, including enhancements to the Messages app. With the addition of new text effects, iPhone users now have more ways to communicate effectively, and these effects are simple to use.

Text effects provide the ability to animate words in various ways to convey a message creatively. There are eight new text effects available for those using iOS 18 or later. It is important to note that both the sender and the recipient need to be using iOS 18, iPadOS 18, or macOS 15 Sequoia to view these effects, and they only work with iMessage, not SMS or RCS.

To use text effects in Messages, follow these steps:

1. Type out your message.
2. Double tap the word or words you want to add an effect to.
3. Tap the “A” icon to the right of the suggestions bar above the keyboard.
4. Select the animated effect you want to add to the selected words.

Alternatively, you can access this feature by tapping on “Text Effects” in the popup that appears when you select words. If you decide not to use an effect, simply tap back on the words to return to regular typing.

Once you choose an effect, you’ll see a preview of the animation before sending your message to ensure you achieve the desired look. The iOS 18 update, released in September 2024, also includes Home Screen customization options, a redesigned Control Center, and a new Photos app. Additionally, it sets the stage for iOS 18.1, which introduces Apple Intelligence features to iPhones.
