Key Information
- Instagram’s new Blend feature enables users to curate a collaborative feed of Reels with friends through Direct Messages, reflecting both individual and shared Instagram activities.
- This feature was initially revealed last month and is now being phased in, with users in areas like the U.S. and Canada already utilizing it.
- While it appears to offer a fresh method for users to engage with more Reels, it can be accessed via a new Blend icon in DMs.
A few weeks ago, Instagram revealed a new feature aimed at increasing user engagement, especially within Direct Messages (DMs). The platform’s head, Adam Mosseri, introduced the Blend feature, which is now expanding its reach across various regions.
Blend provides a novel way for Instagram users to connect with their friends in DMs. This feature creates a collective feed of trending Reels that combines suggestions based on individual preferences and those of their friends—allowing both to explore a shared feed tailored to their interests. Setting up this shared feed is simple and can be done with just one friend or within a group DM.
To initiate the invite process, users can click the new Blend icon in DMs. The suggested Reels will be based on each individual’s Instagram activity, including the Reels they view and engage with. When friends join a Blend, the Reels shared in the conversation will be adjusted accordingly, updating the Blend for everyone involved, whether in a group DM or a one-on-one chat.
Every user in the chat has the choice to remain in the Blend or opt out at any time, based on their preferences.
As mentioned, this feature was first introduced a few weeks ago, and while some users began engaging with it during that same week, others started noticing the new Blend icon last week, particularly in regions such as the U.S. and Canada. The rollout appears to be gradual, so if you haven’t seen the option yet, it should be available to you in the coming days or weeks.
Additionally, Instagram has launched a new app named Edits for both Android and iOS platforms, introduced just last month. This app serves as Instagram’s response to Byte Dance’s CapCut, offering advanced editing features like clip-level precision, a green screen tool, and AI image animation. It also enables content creators to track their real-time statistics, including viewer engagement on Reels. Initially announced in January, the global rollout commenced last month.
