Prior to the announcement of Trump’s tariffs, Apple had already started expanding iPhone production in India to reduce dependence on China.
Despite Trump’s push for iPhones to be manufactured in the US, Apple is likely to increase manufacturing in India. According to The Straits Times, India has significantly increased iPhone production in the year ending March 2025.
It was reported that India produced iPhones worth $22 billion from March 2024 to March 2025, marking a 60% increase from the previous year. Unspecified sources claim that India now manufactures 20% of all iPhones.
Details in the report are unclear, such as the source of the $22 billion figure. It is also unknown how many iPhones were exported and how many were sold within India. Previous reports suggested that India produces 30-40 million iPhones annually, with 12 million sold within the country.
The $22 billion figure represents the factory gate value of iPhones produced in India, without factoring in shipping, taxes, or tariffs. Despite the lack of specific numbers, claims that India accounts for 20% of Apple’s global iPhone production align with previous reports. Apple aims to produce 25% of all iPhones in India in the future.
Recently, it was reported that Apple’s main supplier Foxconn plans to double its production facilities in India by the end of 2025.
