According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, an Apple supplier may have been chosen to manufacture an Apple-designed smart home camera and future health-focused AirPods.
After discontinuing the Apple Car project, Apple shifted its focus to smart home and AI investments. While Apple Intelligence has been released, little evidence of Apple’s commitment to the smart home has been seen aside from rumors about a smart monitor.
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s latest rumor based on the supply chain suggests that Apple supplier Goertek has received orders for two products expected in 2026: a smart home camera and health-focused AirPods.
Apple previously worked with Goertek for assembly, but compliance issues caused a reduction in orders. Kuo mentions that the relationship normalized in the latter half of 2024, leading to new product orders.
Apple is making its first foray into the smart home IP camera market, with mass production scheduled for 2026, targeting annual shipments in the tens of millions. November 12, 2024
Since the launch of HomeKit in 2014, Apple has mainly provided APIs and protocols for the smart home sector. The HomePod, HomePod mini, and Apple TV 4K are the closest products to the smart home category.
Rumors suggested Apple might develop its own smart home products like light bulbs, but such products never materialized. Apple even stopped working on its routers since the inception of HomeKit, indicating a reliance on third-party hardware.
The upcoming Apple-made smart home camera in 2026 could change this landscape. It is unclear what unique features Apple could offer compared to existing HomeKit Secure Video cameras.
Kuo believes that Apple views IP cameras as a significant growth opportunity. The total market for IP cameras is around 30 to 40 million units annually, with Apple aiming for about 10 million shipments.
The planned release of the smart camera in 2026 aligns with the expected rise in adoption of Matter-enabled cameras. Apple is also likely to enter more smart home accessory markets over time.
Another growth opportunity for Apple lies in wearables, particularly AirPods. Goertek has been identified as the future primary supplier of health-focused AirPods.
While the iPhone remains Apple’s top revenue generator, the company aims to satisfy investors with sales of devices across various categories targeting smaller yet profitable markets.
