The focus on artificial intelligence (AI) from the biggest tech companies in the world has introduced tools into our lives that have the potential to bring significant changes to our daily tasks. Currently, many early AI concepts focus on photo and video editing, suggesting that AI could enhance our digitally captured world.
However, the use of AI in editing photos raises ethical concerns. AI edits can manipulate reality by removing objects from images or adding people that were not originally present. This digital alteration can be misleading and potentially misused.
Google has responded to these concerns by announcing that they will now make it more transparent when a photo has been edited with Google AI. Going forward, the Google Photos app will display “AI Info” in the metadata or “Details” section of an image to indicate that it has been edited using Google AI.
To view this information, users simply need to open a photo in Google Photos and swipe up slightly to access the details below the image. In addition to location data, backup information, and camera settings, users will now see a new “AI info” section indicating that the photo was “Edited with Google AI.” This label will appear for images edited with tools such as Magic Editor, Magic Eraser, or Zoom Enhance, as well as for images composed of elements from different photos using features like Best Take or Add Me.
The “AI info” section is expected to be rolled out in Google Photos as early as next week.
