Emojis have become an integral part of our daily communication, and Google is expanding their presence to new platforms and teasing upcoming additions.
As part of World Emoji Day, Google shared some interesting facts about emojis and hinted at what’s in store for YouTube. The video platform’s Shorts will soon feature a new “Emoji Kitchen Effect” for user-created videos. This feature will allow users to play a unique game where they can select their favorite emojis to create a new expression.
Tilting your head left or right will select the emoji, resulting in a combination that may be either fantastic or bizarre. Google expects this feature to be available to users creating Shorts “in a few weeks.”
In addition to this, Google is set to introduce a new set of emojis under the Unicode 16.0 release. The seven new expressions that will be added to your keyboard are: fingerprint, leafless tree, harp, face with bags under eyes, splat, shovel, root vegetable.
These emojis will be gradually rolled out, with Android phones expected to receive them “by March 2025.” Other Google products should receive them “early” next year, and the emojis will appear as a web font by September 2024.
Google also highlights some existing features in its ecosystem, such as emoji combos. This new feature was introduced in June and allows users to combine two emojis in Messages to see a suggested “combination.” For example, combining a disco ball and a set of headphones will result in a glittering disco headset, which can be sent as a sticker through Gboard.
Additionally, Android users can customize the skin tone of certain emojis, a feature that was rolled out last October.
Last year, Emojipedia reported on the trends and changes in the world of emojis. It was noted that 26% of tweets (now X) included an emoji, a 22% increase from 2013. The most popular emojis in 2023 were 😂 Face with Tears of Joy, 🤣 Rolling on the Floor Laughing, and ❤️ Red Heart.
In 2024, Emojipedia’s award ceremony crowned 🙂↔️ head shaking horizontally as the top emoji, with 🙂↕️ head shaking vertically and 🐦🔥 the phoenix following closely behind.
