Google has removed its controversial Gemini Olympics ad that promoted writing AI-generated letters.

During the early Olympics coverage, Google aired an ad that has since been removed called “Google + Team USA — Dear Sydney.” The ad featured Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone but was criticized for missing the mark. The story in the ad revolved around a father and daughter who are fans of running, with the daughter following McLaughlin-Levrone’s career. Instead of writing a heartfelt letter to Sydney, they used Google’s AI to do most of the work, which implied that AI could replace genuine human creativity. The ad faced backlash online, leading Google to phase it out of their Olympics rotation. Google defended their use of AI, stating that it is meant to enhance human creativity, not replace it. The ad can still be viewed on YouTube.
