UPDATE
Apple Achieves Over 60% Reduction in Global Greenhouse Gas Emissions
In anticipation of Earth Day, Apple announces significant milestones in emissions reduction, renewable energy, and recycling efforts.
Customers are encouraged to participate in in-store device recycling with a special offer available until May 16.
Today, Apple revealed that it has exceeded a 60% reduction in its global greenhouse gas emissions relative to 2015 figures, advancing toward its goal of becoming carbon neutral across its entire operational footprint by 2030. Other key achievements include utilizing 99% recycled rare earth elements in all magnets and 99% recycled cobalt in all Apple-designed batteries. This information is detailed in the company’s latest annual Environmental Progress Report released today.
“We are immensely proud of the strides we are taking towards our Apple 2030 vision, as it permeates every sector of our business,” stated Lisa Jackson, Apple’s Vice President of Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives. “We are utilizing more clean energy and recycled materials than ever before, conserving water resources, reducing waste globally, and making substantial investments in nature. As we approach 2030, the challenges ahead will intensify, and we are committed to addressing them through innovation, collaboration, and a sense of urgency.”
Apple’s 2030 blueprint emphasizes a 75% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to its 2015 baseline, before compensating for any remaining emissions through high-quality carbon credits. Last year, Apple’s concerted efforts to minimize its carbon footprint—including transitioning its supply chain to renewable energy and increasing the use of recycled materials—prevented an estimated 41 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions.
As Apple commemorates Earth Day with employees, partners, and customers worldwide, the company is providing a glimpse into its ongoing environmental initiatives.
Advancing Clean Energy in Apple’s Supply Chain
Currently, 17.8 gigawatts of renewable energy is being utilized in Apple’s global supply chain, a result of the company’s longstanding partnerships with suppliers to shift to 100% renewable energy for Apple manufacturing by 2030. The renewable energy adopted by Apple’s suppliers helped avoid 21.8 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions in 2024, reflecting an increase of over 17% compared to the previous year. Furthermore, nearly 2 million metric tons of emissions were avoided last year through energy efficiency improvements made in collaboration with Apple.
Enhancing Semiconductor Production Sustainability
Besides promoting clean energy among suppliers, Apple is focused on reducing the climate impact of industrial processes, particularly in semiconductor and flat-panel display manufacturing, which are known sources of potent fluorinated greenhouse gases (F-GHGs). Apple is proud to announce that 26 of its direct semiconductor suppliers have pledged to cut at least 90% of F-GHG emissions from their production facilities by 2030. Many of these facilities cater to other clients, broadening the impact of this commitment. Concurrently, all of Apple’s direct display suppliers have made the same commitment. Together, display and semiconductor suppliers successfully mitigated 8.4 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions in 2024, with these new pledges set to enhance future progress.
Increasing Use of Recycled and Renewable Materials
Apple is committed to incorporating more recycled and renewable materials into its products, thereby reducing their carbon footprint while maintaining high quality and performance standards. Earlier this year, Apple surpassed 99% of its goal to use 100% recycled rare earth elements in all magnets and 100% recycled cobalt in all Apple-designed batteries by 2025. Magnets represent the largest use of rare earth elements in Apple products, while Apple-designed batteries account for over 97% of Apple’s total cobalt consumption. The company prioritizes responsible sourcing of both recycled and primary minerals and upholds high human rights and environmental standards throughout its supply chain.
Minimizing Waste Impact
In 2024, suppliers involved in Apple’s Zero Waste program diverted approximately 600,000 metric tons of waste from landfills, bringing the cumulative total to 3.6 million metric tons since the program’s launch in 2015. This achievement equates to the removal of 4.5 million square meters of landfill space. Apple and its suppliers are exploring innovative solutions to further enhance progress, including recyclable protective films and reusable trays in manufacturing, as well as recovering valuable metals from waste generated during printed circuit board production.
Innovating to Minimize Product Emissions
Apple’s commitment to environmental sustainability is evident in its products. Earlier this year, the company introduced the new MacBook Air, which features over 55% recycled content, marking the highest percentage in any of its products. Last year also saw the launch of the first carbon-neutral Mac with the new Mac mini. Additionally, customers have the option to select a carbon-neutral variant of any Apple Watch, available in any material. These carbon-neutral products result from innovations that significantly reduce carbon emissions across the primary areas of materials, electricity, and transportation, with high-quality carbon credits utilized to offset the minimal remaining emissions.
Conserving Billions of Gallons of Water Annually
Since the inception of the Supplier Clean Water Program in 2013, Apple and its suppliers have saved over 90 billion gallons of fresh water through practices that promote water reuse and efficiency. Participating suppliers achieved an average reuse rate of 42% last year, contributing to the savings of 14 billion gallons of fresh water in 2024 alone. Apple has committed to replenishing 100% of its freshwater withdrawals in high-stress areas by 2030 and has initiated sustainable partnerships that account for over 40% of that goal, including replenishment projects in the U.S., India, and Africa, collectively projected to yield nearly 9 billion gallons of water benefits over the next two decades.
Earth Day Celebrations with Apple
In recognition of Earth Day, Apple is providing customers with various opportunities to learn about and take action towards environmental protection. This includes participating in recycling initiatives for valuable materials and engaging with content that raises awareness about Earth’s importance.
Through the Apple Trade In program and free recycling options available at Apple Store locations worldwide, customers can recycle their unused Apple products for credit or responsible disposal. Until May 16, customers who recycle an eligible device in-store can enjoy a 10% discount on an Apple accessory when purchased in the same transaction.
