Stay updated with the 2024 election using Apple News Live Activities, providing real-time results on your Lock Screen and Apple Watch.
Live Activities by Apple have been known for offering updated information in a playful way. Originally used for music playback, sports scores, and call notifications, Apple News is utilizing it for delivering live election updates.
Starting at 6 p.m. EST on Tuesday night, users can access a Live Activity via Apple News that tracks election results. A large interactive widget on the Lock Screen and a continuous display of electoral counts on the Dynamic Island will keep users informed.
While browsing through news and messages, users will have a constant reminder of the ongoing election. Users can dismiss the Dynamic Island content with a swipe, maintaining some mental peace.
To activate the US election results Live Activity:
- Open Apple News
- Tap on the prominent “Follow the 2024 election live” banner
- If not visible, locate the “Election 2024” Special Coverage section in the menu
- A notification will confirm the Live Activity is enabled
Tap on the banner again to turn off the scheduled Live Activity.
Live Activities will be available on iPhone and iPad Lock Screens, with special UI on devices featuring a Dynamic Island. Apple Watch can also display Live Activity data in the widget view.
Apple News previously offered Live Activities for caucus results, proving to be a useful way to follow events. As the election outcome holds higher significance, this tool will serve as a quick glance at immediate results without delving into divisive news coverage.
It remains uncertain how long the Live Activity will remain active, considering preliminary calls and final tallies expected by December 11. The US election will test user engagement with the feature and its endurance after prolonged usage.
Updated November 5, 6PM EST: The Live Activity is now available.
