Apple’s anticipated smart glasses may still be in the works, with a potential launch in 2027 alongside AirPods featuring added cameras.
The Apple Vision Pro is not the end goal for Apple’s head-mounted displays or spatial computing. While there has been speculation about smart glasses, it seems that a pair could actually be released by Cupertino in the near future.
The Vision Project Group, currently working on new headset products similar to the Apple Vision Pro, is reportedly exploring the possibility of releasing smart glasses. According to a Sunday newsletter from Bloomberg, the team is aiming for a 2027 launch for the device.
Apple has long been rumored to be working on smart glasses, also known as Apple Glass, but it was previously considered a distant prospect due to technological challenges. Numerous rumors have suggested that they are on the horizon, but consumers may have to wait a while.
In addition to the glasses, which could have a similar concept to Meta’s Ray-Bans, the team also intends to release AirPods with cameras. These have also been rumored previously, with mentions of using IR cameras to enhance spatial audio by detecting the surroundings.
The eventual development and launch of both devices could help Apple recuperate the billions invested in visual intelligence technology. Mainly seen in the Apple Vision Pro, this technology scans the environment and collects data to enhance the user experience.
It is possible that some of this technology may have been adapted from Apple’s long-term Apple Car project, which utilized object detection for its self-driving capabilities.
While Vision Pro showcases the capabilities, the technology will be expanded to other products in Apple’s ecosystem, including visual intelligence features on the iPhone through Apple Intelligence.
