Apple Intelligence Launches Today on iPhone, iPad, and Mac
Apple introduces Apple Intelligence, a powerful suite of capabilities available today for iPhone, iPad, and Mac users. This innovative personal intelligence system empowers users to enhance their writing, summarize notifications, emails, and messages, and enjoy a more capable Siri experience. Other features include the Clean Up tool for removing distractions from images and more.
CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA – Apple has announced that the initial features of Apple Intelligence are now live, accessible via a free software update with the rollout of iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1. Apple Intelligence harnesses the capabilities of Apple silicon to create and comprehend language and images, enabling users to perform tasks more efficiently while maintaining a strong commitment to privacy. This launch marks the beginning of a robust set of features, with additional updates planned for the coming months.
"Apple Intelligence marks a turning point for iPhone, iPad, and Mac users, delivering groundbreaking experiences and tools that will redefine productivity," stated Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. "By integrating generative AI technology into our devices, we’re providing users with an intuitive intelligence system that prioritizes their privacy. We are incredibly excited about the potential of Apple Intelligence to enhance our users’ daily lives."
"With Apple Intelligence, we’re introducing remarkable functionalities that enhance the usefulness of your iPhone, iPad, and Mac," explained Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering. "From Writing Tools that refine your text to intuitive notification summaries, this powerful system builds on a foundation of privacy through on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute, extending the security of Apple devices into the cloud. We are thrilled to present these features today, with many more enhancements on the horizon."
Comprehensive Writing Tools
Integrated seamlessly across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, the Writing Tools feature assists users in improving their writing by enabling rewriting, proofreading, and summarizing text in various applications, including Mail, Messages, Notes, Pages, and third-party apps.
With the Rewrite feature, users can select different versions of their text and adjust the tone—whether professional, concise, or friendly—to match the conversation. The Proofread feature checks grammar and sentence structure, providing suggestions and explanations for user modifications. Users can also summarize selected text into short paragraphs, bullet points, or lists.
Enhanced Siri Experience
Siri is now more conversational, flexible, and integrated into the overall user experience. A sophisticated new design features a glowing light around the edge of the screen on active devices. Users can also interact with Siri via typing on all devices, switching effortlessly between text and voice to complete tasks. Better language understanding allows Siri to keep track of user context across multiple inquiries, and it can answer a wide range of questions regarding Apple product features.
Intelligent Photos App Updates
The Photos app now boasts natural language search capabilities, allowing users to find images and videos by simply describing what they’re looking for. Unwanted objects or individuals in photos can be removed using the Clean Up tool, ensuring that users capture their intended moments. The revamped Memories feature enables users to create personalized movies by simply typing a description, allowing Apple Intelligence to curate and narrate video and photo compilations based on user input.
New Tools for Focus and Prioritization
Managing emails has become simpler. The Priority Messages section highlights urgent emails, while users can view summaries without opening messages. The Smart Reply feature suggests quick responses and identifies questions needing answers. In addition, users can manage notifications more efficiently with notification summaries on the Lock Screen, and focus modes will help surface only the most critical notifications.
Users can now record, transcribe, and summarize audio within the Notes and Phone apps. Participants on a call will be notified of audio recordings, and Apple Intelligence will generate summaries after calls to outline key discussion points.
Exciting Features Coming Soon
More Apple Intelligence features are set to launch in December, with additional updates rolling out over the following months. These include the ability to create custom emoji and playful images, enhanced Writing Tools for more specific text refinements, and a new visual intelligence experience leveraging Camera Control on the iPhone 16 series. Users can also benefit from interaction with third-party tools and services within the privacy framework of Apple Intelligence.
Commitment to Privacy
Apple Intelligence prioritizes user privacy at every stage. Many processing tasks occur on-device, and for those that require cloud assistance, data is never stored or shared with Apple. Users can control the integration with ChatGPT, ensuring their privacy is safeguarded.
Availability
The first round of Apple Intelligence features is now available as a free update with iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1, accessible to users worldwide when devices are set to U.S. English.
Support for additional languages will roll out, starting with localized English for several countries in December, followed by a broader range of language support throughout 2024.
