Apple Intelligence Becomes Even More Robust with New Features for its Device Ecosystem

Developers can now leverage the on-device foundation model of Apple Intelligence to enhance app experiences with heightened privacy and intelligence.

CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA – Apple today unveiled exciting new capabilities within Apple Intelligence, crafted to enrich user interactions across its array of devices, including iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple Vision Pro. This upgrade introduces innovative ways for users to engage, featuring enhancements like Live Translation for seamless communication; improved visual intelligence responses for richer interactions with on-screen content; and expressive options via Image Playground and Genmoji.1 Developers will be able to utilize Apple’s on-device large language model to deliver fast, private intelligence that remains accessible offline. These new features are available for testing now, with a broader rollout expected this fall for compatible devices set to supported languages.

"Last year marked the beginning of our journey to offer users relevant and practical intelligence while safeguarding their privacy,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering. “With improved capability and efficiency in our foundational models, we’re embedding features deeper across our operating systems. Plus, by providing developers direct access to the on-device model, we anticipate a new wave of intelligent experiences in their apps. We’re excited to see the creativity this ignites."

By year-end, Apple Intelligence will support eight additional languages: Danish, Dutch, Norwegian, Portuguese (Portugal), Swedish, Turkish, Chinese (Traditional), and Vietnamese.

Break Language Barriers with Live Translation

Live Translation empowers users to communicate across different languages in real-time through messaging and speaking. This feature is integrated into Messages, FaceTime, and Phone, utilizing Apple’s own models that function entirely on-device to ensure personal conversations remain private.

In Messages, users can benefit from automatic translation of text as they type. Whether making travel plans or chatting with new friends, messages can be translated into the recipient’s preferred language instantly. Similarly, during FaceTime calls, users can view translated captions while still hearing the speaker’s voice, and translations will be vocalized during phone conversations.2,3

Creative Expression Gets a Boost with Genmoji and Image Playground

Genmoji and Image Playground enhance users’ self-expression, allowing for the creation of custom emojis based on text descriptions, and combining emojis with narratives for unique outputs. Users can craft images inspired by friends, complete with adjustable expressions and personal attributes like hairstyle.

In Image Playground, users will discover fresh styles thanks to integration with ChatGPT, such as oil painting or vector art. By utilizing the Any Style feature, users can input specific ideas, which Image Playground will generate as unique images based on their descriptions or photos—ensuring user control throughout, with no data shared without consent.

Visual Intelligence Enhances User Interaction

Building on Apple Intelligence, visual intelligence now empowers users to take action on content displayed on their iPhone screens.

Users can utilize their iPhone’s camera to learn about their surroundings and can now engage with contents on their screens more effectively. For instance, they can ask ChatGPT questions about displayed images, conduct searches through supported apps for similar products, or even highlight specific items for online searches. The system also prompts users with calendar suggestions if they observe events, automatically capturing key information such as date and time.4 Users can access visual intelligence simply by pressing the same buttons used for screenshots, offering options to save, share, or explore further.

New Fitness Experience on Apple Watch: Workout Buddy

Introducing Workout Buddy—an innovative workout feature on Apple Watch powered by Apple Intelligence. It tailors motivational insights based on users’ fitness data and history, offering guidance in real-time.

This feature analyzes workout performance metrics, such as heart rate and pace, and provides personalized insights through a dynamic voice developed from Fitness+ trainer data, ensuring relevant energy and style. Workout Buddy functions privately and securely, ensuring user data is handled confidentially.

Available on Apple Watch with Bluetooth headphones, Workout Buddy requires a paired Apple Intelligence-supported iPhone. Initially, it will support popular workout types including Running, Walking, Cycling, and other training formats.

Developers Gain Access to Apple Intelligence On-Device Model

Apple is granting developers the ability to directly utilize the on-device foundation model intrinsic to Apple Intelligence.

Through the Foundation Models framework, app developers can leverage Apple Intelligence to create offline intelligent experiences while maintaining user privacy all without incurring cloud API costs. For example, an education app can create personalized quizzes from users’ notes without extra fees. The framework supports Swift, enabling developers to access the model with minimal coding effort.

Intelligent Shortcuts Enhance User Efficiency

Shortcuts are now more intelligent, allowing users access to smart actions powered by Apple Intelligence. Users can summarize text or create images directly within the Shortcuts app.

By tapping into Apple Intelligence models, users can maintain privacy while generating responses for their shortcuts. For instance, students can develop a shortcut that compares lecture transcriptions with their personal notes and highlights key points.

Further Advancements in Apple Intelligence

Apple Intelligence is increasingly integrated into daily apps and experiences:

  • Email Management: Key actions in emails and notes are automatically recognized and sorted into Reminders.
  • Order Tracking: Apple Wallet summarizes order details from emails, displaying all usual updates in one view.
  • Poll Creation: Messages can automatically suggest polls during conversations, enhancing interaction.
