Just a week prior to yesterday’s I/O keynote, Google revealed that Gemini would be integrated into vehicles. However, the tech giant had more exciting updates for car platforms this week. For Android Auto users, the standout news revolves around new applications that will soon be available when your phone is connected. Two particular categories are set to bring smiles to users’ faces.
This week, Google discreetly announced the introduction of video and browser apps to Android Auto, simply noting they would be “coming soon.” This is particularly significant for Android Auto users who want convenient access to video content or a web browser while parked.
Initially, video apps on Android Auto will be accessible to phones operating on Android 16 and in select “compatible cars.” There’s also a suggested requirement to be parked, which makes perfect sense.
As for browser apps on Android Auto, Google didn’t provide further specifics aside from the “coming soon” indication. Given that browsers are still relatively new to cars with Google built-in (currently labeled as “in Beta”), this feature may take a bit longer to roll out compared to video app access. It’s hoped that once available, Chrome will be introduced, complete with Cast support, similar to what has been done with Rivian vehicles.
We’ll keep you updated on any developments regarding the availability of these categories.
