Additionally, the ‘Zoom Enhance’ feature on the Pixel 8 Pro enhances fine details.

What you need to know

  • Google states that a camera feature it introduced during I/O 2023 is now rolling out on the Pixel 8 Pro and will also be available for Pro model Pixel 9 devices.
  • “Zoom Enhance” utilizes the device’s AI software to intelligently process zooms to maintain a photo’s high quality.
  • Made by Google 2024 included new AI features like Gemini Live, the revamped Pixel Screenshot, and the Pixel 9’s new “Add Me” camera function.

Google is introducing a photo feature for the Pixel 9 that may have slipped your mind. Zoom Enhance, initially announced at Google I/O 2023 for the Pixel 8 Pro, is coming to both Pixel 9 and 8 phones soon.

Zoom Enhance is designed to address the common quality loss experienced when zooming in on a distant photo. A Google blog post (via The Verge) includes the feature among other recently revealed features like Add Me and Reimagine with Magic Editor.

Google explains that users zooming into a photo will leverage the on-device AI software to intelligently fill in the gaps between pixels and predict fine details. The feature aims to help maintain high quality in photos when zooming in on specific elements.

Google hardware chief Rick Osterloh initially introduced the feature at Made by Google 2023, mentioning that it would allow users to “get closer than ever, even when you forget to zoom” through the camera. Despite being expected to arrive on the Pixel 8 series relatively quickly, it underwent a longer development process than anticipated.

As highlighted by The Verge, the example of Zoom Enhance appears somewhat lackluster, showing minimal improvement in quality (for the GIF, refer to the blog post). We will need to test Zoom Enhance ourselves to determine if it was worth the wait or if Google had to compromise on its original AI feature goal.

The company confirms that the Pixel 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, and 9 Pro Fold will all have this feature. Additionally, the feature is being introduced to the Pixel 8 Pro today (August 15).

There’s a lot to unpack from the recent Made by Google event, with one of the main highlights being the Pixel 9’s plethora of AI features and camera improvements. For example, the Pixel 9 Pro offers 20X Super Res Zoom and auto-enhances videos to 8K quality.

Another reveal from Made by Google was a new iteration of its AI model, known as Gemini Live. This version is the most conversational variant, allowing users to engage with the AI on a wide range of topics and hopefully receive relevant information.

The updated version of Pixel Screenshots comes alongside Pixel Studio for AI assistance in organizing or utilizing a prompt to create a photo.

On the camera front, Google’s new feature for the Pixel 9 is “Add Me.” The company demonstrated this live during the event with NBA star Jimmy Butler. Users can capture a photo with Add Me, freeze that memory in time, and then switch places with one of the subjects to include themselves in the photo.

The result is a photo that appears as though you or something else was always part of the frame from the beginning.
