Apple has chosen Samsung Display to produce the OLED screens for the iPhone Fold project, a crucial component that will shape the device’s functionality.

According to sources from Business Korea, Apple has opted to work exclusively with Samsung Display for the initial release of its foldable screen. Despite partnering with other suppliers like LG Display and BOE for its products, Apple has selected Samsung for its folding device screens.

Samsung Display’s technical expertise in minimizing screen creases and experience with their own folding products played a key role in Apple’s decision. Full-scale production is expected to begin by the end of 2025 or early 2026, covering the main 7.8-inch folding OLED panel and a 5.5-inch external display.

LG out in the cold

It is uncommon for Apple to choose just one screen supplier, as the company typically works with multiple suppliers to enhance competition, reduce costs, and improve quality. This decision means excluding LG Display, a longstanding supply chain partner, despite previous collaborations on foldable OLED displays.

While LG Display was initially reported as a partner for Apple’s foldable iPhone screen, Apple’s focus has shifted to Samsung Display for the iPhone Fold. This doesn’t necessarily rule out future collaborations with LG Display, especially if there is demand for the iPhone Fold or potential for a second folding model.
