The advertisement for “Wisconsin Cheese Mart: Gemini in Google Docs” has sparked controversy due to incorrect information presented by Gemini. Google has since edited the ad to remove the flawed claim.
A specific commercial from this campaign faced backlash for inaccurate details in Gemini’s output. The claim that Gouda accounts for “50 to 60 percent of the world’s cheese consumption” was corrected by Google after public scrutiny.
The original YouTube video showcasing this ad is still available for viewing, but Google discreetly addressed the misinformation by editing the content without a formal announcement.

Initial suspicions about Gemini’s output being a hallucination were disproved, with Google Cloud Apps President Jerry Dischler stating that Gemini is based on real web data.
While Dischler’s statement holds true, it’s worth noting that the controversial output was not generated by Gemini. The same information was reportedly written by a human and appeared on the Wisconsin Cheese Mart website in 2020, years before Gemini’s release as Bard.
Although the correction was made, the commercial still attributes the flawed information to Gemini. This suggests that the misinformation about Gouda may not be an AI error but rather a human mistake.
Android Central reached out to Google for clarification on the removal of the incorrect stat from the ad and the attribution of the content to Gemini. As of now, Google has not provided a response to our inquiries.
