Rumors suggest that the iPhone 17 and the iPhone 17 Slim will once again feature ProMotion support, continuing the speculation about the high refresh rate feature.
ProMotion has been a Pro-level feature for the iPhone for some time, with occasional rumors hinting at its inclusion in all models in the future. Following the release of the iPhone 16 without ProMotion, attention has now turned to its potential appearance in the iPhone 17.
An industry source from ETNews reported on Sunday that Apple is planning to use low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) panels for all four iPhone 17 displays, including the iPhone 17 and the iPhone 17 Slim, as well as the existing two Pro models.
LTPO is a display technology that allows smartphone displays to operate at various refresh rates, balancing between high and low rates while maintaining low power consumption. It is also responsible for the always-on display feature seen in the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max.
While ETNews may not have a strong track record in predicting future Apple products, their report adds to the growing rumors surrounding ProMotion and its potential availability in upcoming models.
Several sources have indicated the possible expansion of ProMotion to other iPhone models, with similar claims being made in July and September.
Another LTPO-related rumor making rounds suggests that changes to LTPO in the Apple Watch Series 10 could lead to a technological shift in future iPhone screens.
Utilizing LTPO3 could result in even greater power savings, with the potential for ProMotion to extend its refresh rate range, potentially increasing from 120Hz to 240Hz.
