Nothing is gearing up for its major Android 15 rollout later this year by launching its beta testing program.
In a post on its Newsroom, the company outlined the start of its Nothing OS 3.0 (Android 15) Open Beta for all Phone 2a users. To participate, Phone 2a users need to make sure they have NOS version 2.6 installed (Pacman-U2.6-240828_1906). Interested testers must download/install the necessary APK file and then go to Settings > System > Update to Beta version.
By tapping “Check for new version” and following the instructions, users can join the beta program.
In this “exclusive preview” of OS 3.0 (Android 15), users will find redesigned lock screen features. Long-pressing the lock screen will bring up the customization page with new clock faces and an expanded widget area for quicker access to tools.
The Quick Settings panel on the Phone 2a’s home screen has undergone a significant makeover. Nothing OS 3.0 introduces a new design with optimized editing features. The widget library has been expanded, and visual updates have been made to various connectivity settings.
Some key highlights from the changelog include:
- Improved camera launch speed under the Camera Widget.
- Reduced HDR scene processing time.
- Enhanced portrait effects by adjusting blur intensity based on face size.
- Enhanced camera performance in low-light conditions.
- Improved zoom slider display.
- AI-powered Smart Drawer feature to automatically categorize apps into folders for better organization and quick access.
- Ability to pin favorite apps to the top of the app drawer for easy access.
Nothing has also introduced a “movable” pop-up view to enhance multitasking. The Android 15 Open Beta includes a dot matrix animation for the fingerprint scanner, the ability to view information without leaving an app, and more.
Phone 2a users are receiving the Nothing OS 3.0 Open Beta today (Oct 8). The Nothing Phone 2 will follow in November, with the Phone 1, CMF Phone 1, and Phone 2a Plus getting access in December.
During the Ear (Open) launch event, Nothing’s CEO Carl Pei and other team members provided a glimpse of the OS 3.0 update. Some of the key features highlighted in that preview, such as the lock screen customization and Quick Settings panel enhancements, are now part of the beta release. The preview also hinted at more AI features coming to Nothing’s Gallery. Pei teased further AI developments for the company later this year.
The Open Beta for Nothing OS 3.0 starting in October is a prelude to the “general” release scheduled for December 2024.
