September begins with a range of new Android features that enhance user experience, as well as improvements in accessibility features.
Google has announced that Circle to Search is getting an update with music lookup functionality. Users can now tap on a music note icon while watching a video to identify the song playing using AI technology.
Circle to Search can recognize music playing directly on the device or from nearby audio sources. The results include the song’s name, artist, and possibly a YouTube video link.
For safety, Android’s Earthquake Alert System is now active in all U.S. states, aiming to alert users before an earthquake occurs using crowd-sourced detection technology.
In addition, Google is expanding its earthquake warning system to cover the entire U.S. and providing tips on how to respond to alerts.
With the impending release of the Pixel Watch 3, Google is introducing new Maps features for Wear OS. Users can now view offline maps directly on their Wear OS watches if they have downloaded them on their phones.
Furthermore, the update brings voice search and the ability to view surroundings by tapping the watch face.
Android’s accessibility feature, TalkBack, now includes a “detailed description” feature for images by leveraging Gemini models on supported devices. This allows the AI to describe image contents for users with low-vision or blindness.
Gemini in TalkBack supports various types of images, including those in the camera roll, received via text, product images on websites, and social media. Google plans to expand TalkBack’s features for Android 15.
Finally, Chrome on Android now has the capability to read webpage content aloud, with options to adjust reading speed, language, and voice. Users can listen to full articles, recipes, and more using this feature.
