Apple has been actively promoting iPhone child safety measures, while simultaneously engaging in lobbying efforts against further regulations in this area.

Apple is reportedly working to combat smartphone addiction while simultaneously lobbying to limit regulations on the iPhone and App Store. According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple has hired additional lobbyists in response to state efforts to regulate teen smartphone use. One such effort in Louisiana involved Apple pressuring legislators to avoid adding age restrictions through the App Store. Despite initial pushback, Apple’s lobbying efforts were successful in removing the requirement from the proposed legislation. Apple maintains that it provides parental controls and believes sharing age details with third-party apps would invade privacy. The bill eventually passed the Senate without the App Store requirement. Apple has not commented on the situation, and Senator Mizell mentioned that other states have not pursued similar regulations. The legislator behind the bill plans to reintroduce the App Store requirement in the future, citing the need for better parental controls on smartphones. Apple’s lobbying efforts, although typically less than its competitors, have been known to include incentives such as investments in education systems to sway legislation.
