Apple Intelligence was not trained using YouTube videos.

Apple has denied using unethically obtained data to train Apple Intelligence — but has acknowledged its use for another project.

It was recently revealed that an AI research lab called EleutherAI had collected subtitles from YouTube videos without permission from the creators. They also gathered data from Wikipedia, the English Parliament, and Enron staff emails, and added it to a dataset called “the Pile.”

While EleutherAI aimed to make AI development more accessible to those outside of Big Tech, companies like Nvidia, Salesforce, and Apple have utilized the Pile for training various AI projects.

Apple has clarified that although they used the Pile, the dataset was not utilized for Apple Intelligence. Instead, it was used to train their open-source OpenELM models, which were released in April.

According to AppleInsider, Apple has confirmed that OpenELM models do not power any of their AI or machine learning features. The tech giant states that OpenELM was created to contribute to the research community.

Apple emphasizes that OpenELM models were never intended for Apple Intelligence and they have no plans to develop new versions of the OpenELM model.

Apple maintains that the sources for their artificial intelligence projects are ethical and they have paid publishers millions and licensed images from photo library firms.
