We have not discussed OSOM much in recent years because of a promise we made that if their first phone was a crypto phone, we would not continue covering them. The first OSOM phone turned out to be the Solana Saga, a crypto phone, and after sharing that news, we moved on.
Today, we are revisiting the company as they are reportedly shutting down. According to reports, executives at OSOM held a meeting this week to inform employees of the closure and layoffs. Some employees may need to stay on as contractors to support their crypto phone.
The reasons for their lack of success with the crypto phone and their decision to shut down remain unclear. It seems that Solana chose not to use them for their next device, leading OSOM to attempt a pivot to making an AI camera and selling themselves to HP, both of which failed. With no money or future funding in sight, the end appears near.
